Web Design & Development

WordPress Web Design & Development

Stryx Collective designs and builds custom WordPress websites. WordPress is the right choice when a site needs to do more than show pages, such as take bookings, reservations or enquiries, and when you want to be able to change it easily afterwards. Ryan Cumming has been building websites for 10 years.

When WordPress is the right choice

Stryx recommends WordPress when a site needs to be dynamic and carry extra functionality:

  • A booking system
  • Reservations
  • Forms that feed your CRM
  • Anything that has to be easy to customise as the business changes

When it is not

WordPress is overkill for some requirements, and Stryx will tell you so. For an online shop, a platform such as Shopify is sometimes the better choice. The recommendation depends on your use case, and Stryx can be talked out of WordPress when the case is there.

See web design and development for how the platform decision is made.

How Stryx builds on WordPress

  • Research first Discovery covers business goals, audience, keywords and competitors before design starts.
  • Designed for the brand UX wireframes, then UI design and a design system.
  • Built on staging The site is developed and tested on a staging server before it goes live.
  • Responsive Designed for desktop, laptop and mobile screens, and tested in Edge, Firefox, Safari and Chrome.
  • Fast Performance work and image optimisation are part of the build.
  • Integrated Connected to the tools you already use.
  • Search-ready SEO best practice in the build, and technical SEO checked at launch.
  • Handed over You get a handover document: where everything lives, how it is built and who has access.

New WordPress sites are built with Bricks Builder, which keeps pages light and gives your team a tidy way to edit content. Online shops are built with WooCommerce.

Custom WordPress development

When an off-the-shelf plugin does not do what you need, Stryx builds it. That includes:

  • Custom post types and fields, so content such as properties, services or team members is structured and easy to manage
  • Integrations with booking systems, CRMs and payment gateways
  • Functionality written for the site, where no plugin fits

Themes, plugins and licences

WordPress is open source. Neither you nor Stryx owns WordPress or the third-party plugins on your site. What you own is the website built with them.

Some builds use premium themes or plugins that need an annual licence to keep receiving updates and security patches. On a care plan, licences Stryx already holds are included and the updates are done for you. Without a care plan, keeping those licences current and applying updates is your responsibility.

Looking after a WordPress site

A WordPress site needs regular updates, backups and security work to stay safe. See WordPress maintenance for what that involves.

Questions

Questions about WordPress Web Design & Development

Can't see yours? Ask Ryan directly and you'll get a straight answer, usually the same day.

Ask on WhatsApp
When should I use WordPress?

When your site needs to be dynamic and carry extra functionality, such as a booking system, reservations or forms, and it needs to be easy to customise.

Is WordPress right for an online shop?

Sometimes. For some shops a dedicated platform such as Shopify is the better choice. Stryx recommends what suits your use case.

Do I own my WordPress website?

Yes. Once the project is paid in full you own the website and the visual elements created for you. WordPress itself and third-party plugins are open-source or licensed software that no client or agency owns.

Who pays for premium plugin licences?

On a care plan, licences Stryx already holds are included. A plugin that is specific to your site and not one Stryx normally uses is licensed by you.

How long does a WordPress website take?

A typical website project takes about 6 to 8 weeks, depending on complexity and how quickly content and feedback come back.

Which page builder do you use?

New WordPress sites are built with Bricks Builder. It produces light pages and keeps content editing separate from layout, so the design is hard to break by accident.
