Google AI Overviews & AI Mode: what changes for South African businesses

Google AI Overviews and AI Mode are both available in South Africa, according to Google's help pages checked on 10 October 2026. Neither needs special optimisation. Pages that are indexed, useful and clearly written are eligible, and Search Console now shows impressions from both and lets site owners opt out.

Google AI Overviews and AI Mode are both available in South Africa. Google's help pages list South Africa among the supported countries for each feature, as checked on 10 October 2026. For a South African business the practical position is this: no special optimisation is required, informational searches may send fewer clicks, and the basics of SEO and an accurate Google Business Profile still do the work.

These features change often. The details below are correct to the sources read on the date above.

What the two features are

AI Overviews are AI-written summaries that appear in Google Search results for some searches, with links to the pages used. Google says they show only when its systems judge them useful in addition to the standard results, so many searches do not trigger one. Users cannot switch them off. Google describes them as a core Search feature and offers a "Web" filter that shows links only.

AI Mode is a separate, conversational way to search. Google's help page gives three ways to reach it: at google.com/ai, through the AI Mode option on a results page, and in the Google app. Google describes it as suited to complex questions that need comparison or reasoning.

Both work in a similar way. Google's documentation says they may run several related searches for one question, a technique it calls query fan-out, then write a response supported by links to the pages found.

Availability in South Africa

  • AI Mode launched in South Africa on 21 August 2025, alongside Kenya and Nigeria, as reported by MyBroadband.
  • In March 2026, Hypertext reported a Google statement that Afrikaans, Southern Sotho, Setswana and isiZulu had been added to both AI Overviews and AI Mode.
  • Google's AI Mode help page lists South Africa under Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Some advanced options on that page are limited by language, age or paid subscription.

What changes for a business

Informational searches may send fewer clicks

The only study read for this article is American. A Pew Research Center study tracked the browsing of 900 US adults in March 2025. According to Pew, users clicked a traditional search result on 8% of visits to pages with an AI summary, compared with 15% of visits to pages without one. They clicked a link inside the summary on 1% of visits.

No equivalent South African study was found while preparing this article, so treat those figures as an indication and not a local measurement. Google takes a different view of the effect. Its documentation says clicks from results pages with AI Overviews are higher quality, with visitors more likely to spend more time on the site. That page gives no figures.

The sensible response is to measure enquiries, calls and bookings, not visits alone.

Searches with intent to act still need a business

A summary can answer "what is a root canal". It cannot perform one. Pages aimed at people ready to book, call or buy remain the priority, and they need to say clearly what is offered, where and to whom.

Business details feed AI answers

Google's guidance says Google Business Profiles help local businesses and services to be visible in AI responses, and Merchant Center feeds do the same for products. Keeping hours, phone numbers and services accurate there matters for AI answers as well as for Maps.

Site owners can see and control their inclusion

Two Search Console features became available to all websites on 31 August 2026, according to Google's help pages:

  • Search generative AI control. A setting that decides whether a site can appear in AI Overviews, AI Mode and the AI features in Discover. The default is to include. Choosing to exclude removes the site's links and content from those features. Google says it does not affect rankings elsewhere in Search, and does not affect AI training.
  • Generative AI performance report. A report of impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode, by page, country, date and device.

A business that wants to be found has no reason to change the default. The report shows which pages are being shown.

What Google says you need to do

Google's guide to optimising for generative AI features is direct. There are no additional requirements and no special optimisations. A page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet in normal Search. Meeting the requirements does not guarantee inclusion.

The guide lists what is not needed: llms.txt or other special files, breaking content into small chunks, rewriting content in special phrasing, inauthentic mentions on other sites, and special structured data.

What it does recommend:

  • Content written from real knowledge and experience, which it calls non-commodity content
  • Clear organisation with headings and sections, written for people
  • Pages that can be crawled, with important content in text
  • A good page experience on every device
  • Structured data that matches the visible page, as part of normal SEO
  • Accurate Business Profile and Merchant Center information

What Stryx recommends

The order matters:

  1. Get core SEO right: pages built correctly, one topic per page, no pages competing with each other.
  2. Add a short summary at the top of each important page that answers the main question.
  3. Add real questions and answers.
  4. Keep the Google Business Profile complete and accurate.
  5. Measure the result in enquiries, calls and bookings.
