SEO vs Google Ads: where to spend first

Google Ads buys visibility now and stops when you stop paying. SEO earns visibility over months and keeps working after the work is done. If you need enquiries soon and can fund clicks, start with ads. If you can wait and want lower long-term reliance on paid traffic, start with SEO. Most businesses end up using both.

Google Ads and SEO both put a business in front of people searching on Google, but they work on different clocks. Ads can bring visits within days and stop the moment the budget stops. SEO takes months to build and keeps bringing visits after the work is done. Where to spend first depends on how soon you need enquiries, how much you can spend each month, and whether your website is ready to convert the visits you pay for.

How each one works

Google Ads

With Search ads you bid to appear for chosen searches. Google runs an auction each time someone searches. Its documentation on the ad auction explains that position is decided by Ad Rank, which combines your bid with the quality of your ad and landing page, the expected impact of ad assets, and the context of the search. You pay when someone clicks, and the amount is often less than your maximum bid.

A higher bid alone does not win. A relevant ad pointing to a useful page can outrank a higher bidder, so the quality of the website matters for ads too.

SEO

SEO is the work of making a site easier for search engines to understand and more useful to the people searching, so that pages rank in the unpaid results. It covers the technical build, the structure of the site, the content on each page, and the signals that show a business is real and trusted, such as its Google Business Profile for local searches.

You cannot pay Google for a better unpaid ranking. Google states that Search gives advertisers no ranking boost. It also sets expectations on timing: its SEO Starter Guide says some changes take effect in hours and others can take several months, and that there is no guarantee of results.

How they compare

Speed

Ads are faster. A campaign can be live and receiving clicks soon after it is approved. SEO needs time for pages to be built, crawled, indexed and compared against competitors.

Cost pattern

Ads have two costs: the spend paid to Google for clicks and, if you use one, the fee for the person managing the account. The spend continues for as long as you want the traffic. SEO has no cost per click. The cost is the work, which is heaviest at the start and continues at a lower level to maintain and extend it.

What happens when you stop

Stop ads and the traffic ends that day. Stop SEO and the rankings you have earned usually hold for a while, then drift as competitors keep working and content ages.

Control

Ads give precise control. You choose the searches, locations, hours, budget and message, and you can change them the same day. SEO gives less direct control. You influence rankings, but Google decides them.

Reach

Ads work best for searches with clear buying intent, where a click is worth paying for. SEO can also reach people earlier, when they are researching and comparing, through guides and answers that would be too expensive to advertise against.

Measurement

Ads report spend against results in fine detail. SEO results are measurable too, but they arrive slower and are harder to tie to a single action. For both, the measure that matters is enquiries, calls and bookings, not clicks or rankings. That requires conversion tracking to be set up before money is spent on either.

Choose Google Ads first when

  • You need enquiries within weeks, for example a new business or a new service.
  • You have a monthly budget for clicks and can sustain it for a few months while the account is refined.
  • Your website already explains the offer clearly and makes it easy to enquire or book.
  • You want to test which searches and messages bring customers before committing to SEO content.
  • Demand is seasonal or tied to an event.

Choose SEO first when

  • You can wait several months for results to build.
  • The budget is limited and could not fund a meaningful number of clicks each month.
  • Clicks in your field are expensive compared with what a customer is worth.
  • Your customers research before choosing, and useful content can win their trust.
  • Your site has technical or structural problems that would also hurt ad performance.

Fix the website before either

Both channels send people to the same place. If the site is slow, unclear or hard to use on a phone, ads will cost more per enquiry and SEO will bring visits that do not convert. In many cases the first spend should be on the pages people land on and on tracking, with ads or SEO following.

Using both

The two work well together once the basics are in place. A common pattern is to run ads from the start for immediate enquiries while SEO builds, then reduce ad spend on searches where the site now ranks well, and keep ads for competitive or seasonal searches. Search term data from ads also shows which phrases bring customers, which helps decide what SEO content to write.

How Stryx handles each

Stryx offers both, so it has no reason to push one over the other. Google Ads management is a monthly retainer based on scope. Ad spend is billed by Google directly to the client, and accounts are set up in the client's name, so the client keeps the account and its history. SEO is a monthly service that starts with fundamentals, and results are measured on enquiries, calls and bookings. Stryx gives no ranking or results guarantees for either.

Frequently asked questions

Is SEO better than Google Ads?

Neither is better in general. Ads are faster and more controllable but stop when the budget stops. SEO is slower but keeps working and has no cost per click. The better choice depends on your timeline, budget and how ready your website is.

Does running Google Ads improve my SEO rankings?

No. Google states that advertisers receive no ranking boost in Search. Ads can help SEO indirectly, because the search term data shows which phrases bring customers and are worth writing content for.

How long does SEO take compared with Google Ads?

Ads can bring clicks within days of launch. Google's SEO Starter Guide says some SEO changes take effect in hours and others can take several months. For a competitive search, expect SEO to be measured in months, with no guaranteed outcome.

Can I stop Google Ads once my SEO is working?

Often you can reduce them. Many businesses cut ad spend on searches where they now rank well and keep ads for competitive, seasonal or high-value searches. Test the change and watch enquiries, not only traffic.

Who pays Google for the ad clicks?

With Stryx, the client does. Ad spend is billed by Google directly to the client, and the account is set up in the client's name. The management fee is separate and is a monthly retainer based on scope.
