Booking engines for lodges and villas compared

There is no single best booking engine for a guest house, lodge or villa. The right one depends on the property type, the channels you sell through and how the engine joins your website. This comparison covers eight systems and the four checks that matter: website integration, tracking, design control and channel management.

There is no single best booking engine for a guest house, lodge or villa. The right one depends on what kind of property you run, which channels you sell through and how the engine joins your website. This comparison covers eight systems used by South African and Caribbean properties and the four things to check before you commit.

The descriptions below come from each vendor's own website, read in October 2026. Features and plans change, so confirm the details with the vendor. No prices are given here.

Four things to check first

Website integration

Engines join a website in one of three ways:

  • A button that sends the guest to a booking page hosted by the vendor.
  • A widget or embedded form that sits inside your own pages.
  • An API, where your website is built to talk to the booking system directly and the whole booking step is designed as part of the site.

The further down that list you go, the more the booking step feels like part of your website, and the more it costs to build.

Tracking across the handover

When a guest moves from your website to a booking page on another domain, the trail can break. You then see a visit but not the booking it led to. Whether tracking survives the handover depends on the engine. Ask the vendor whether you can add your own Google Analytics and Google Tag Manager, whether completed bookings and their value can be reported, and whether this works across domains.

Design control

Booking engines limit design choices, so the booking step often looks and works worse than the website that led to it. Ask to see the engine on a live site, on a phone, before deciding. Check what you can change: colours, fonts, layout, the wording of each step.

Channel management

If you also sell through Booking.com, Airbnb or travel agents, one calendar has to feed all of them or you will get double bookings. Check which channels the system connects to and whether it sends rates to Google. See the article on Google free booking links for why that matters.

Systems built for hotels, lodges and guest houses

NightsBridge

NightsBridge describes itself as an all-in-one platform for accommodation providers in Africa, with local support. Its site lists B&Bs, guest houses, boutique hotels, game lodges, self-catering units and backpackers among the property types it serves. It includes a front desk system, a website booking engine with real-time availability and promo codes, and a channel manager that connects to international sites and to local ones, including South African travel agents. The booking button is added to your own website. Ask the vendor what analytics and tracking options are available.

Suits: South African and African guest houses, B&Bs and lodges that rely on local channels.

ResRequest

ResRequest is built for boutique safari lodges, coastal resorts and hotels. It combines central reservations, property management, customer records, financial management and reporting, and it handles groups with several properties and companies. Its site says the system does not depend solely on an internet connection, which matters in remote locations. A booking widget shows live availability on the property's website, and a separate tool gives tour operators and agents access to rates and inventory.

Suits: safari lodges and lodge groups that sell largely through agents and tour operators and need central reservations.

Cloudbeds

Cloudbeds serves hotels, multi-property groups, hostels, B&Bs and short-term rentals. Its booking engine is described as running inside the property's own website instead of on a separate hosted page, and it feeds bookings into the Cloudbeds property management system and channel manager. The vendor's page says Google Tag Manager, Google Analytics and the Facebook Pixel can be connected, and that the booking flow can be branded.

Suits: hotels and larger guest houses that want one system for front desk, channels and bookings, with tracking tools supported by the vendor.

Little Hotelier

Little Hotelier is made by SiteMinder for small properties such as B&Bs, guest houses and boutique hotels. It combines a booking engine, front desk system and channel manager. A booking button can be added to an existing website, or the booking page can stand alone if you have no site. The vendor says the look can be adjusted to match the property, and that it connects to metasearch sites including Google.

Suits: small owner-run properties that want a simple all-in-one system.

Beds24

Beds24 covers hotels, B&Bs, guest houses, hostels, campgrounds and holiday homes. The booking engine can be added as widgets, availability calendars or buttons, or used as a standalone booking page. The vendor offers a WordPress plugin, custom CSS, Google Analytics integration and an API, and states that it is a Google Hotel Ads partner and can list holiday rentals on Google.

Suits: owners or developers who are comfortable configuring a flexible system in detail.

Systems built for villas and holiday rentals

Guesty

Guesty is built for short-term rental hosts and managers. It offers its own website builder with templates, and for an existing website it offers a widget or a Booking Engine API. The API documentation covers availability search, price quotes, coupon codes and creating reservations, which is what a developer needs to build the booking step into a custom site.

Suits: villa management companies with a portfolio that want either a quick template site or a fully custom one.

Hostaway

Hostaway is a property management system and channel manager for holiday rental managers, with connections to Airbnb, Vrbo, Booking.com, Google and Expedia. It includes a website builder with booking widgets and an open API for custom builds. WordPress connector plugins exist, including ones made by third parties, so check who maintains a plugin before relying on it.

Suits: villa and apartment managers who sell on several platforms and want a direct booking site tied to the same calendar.

Lodgify

Lodgify is aimed at individual hosts and small managers of holiday rentals and guest houses. It has a website builder, and a booking widget that is pasted into an existing site on WordPress, Squarespace, Wix or Webflow. The widget can be a search box across several properties or a booking box for one, with adjustable colours, fonts and layout, and instant or request-to-book modes. It syncs with Airbnb, Vrbo and Booking.com.

Suits: one to a handful of villas where the owner wants to add bookings to an existing site without a custom build.

Which type to choose

  • Choose a hotel-style system (NightsBridge, Little Hotelier, Cloudbeds, Beds24) when you sell rooms by the night and need a front desk view.
  • Choose a reservations-led system (ResRequest) when agents and tour operators bring much of your business and you run more than one camp or lodge.
  • Choose a rental-style system (Guesty, Hostaway, Lodgify) when you let whole villas or apartments and Airbnb and Vrbo are major channels.
  • Choose a button or widget when budget and speed matter most.
  • Choose an API build when the booking step must match a high-end website and you need full tracking. Stryx has connected websites to property management systems such as Guesty and Hostaway.

If you already have a system that works for operations, changing it for the website's sake is rarely the first move. Start by checking what your current engine allows.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best booking engine for a guest house in South Africa?

It depends on how you sell. A guest house that relies on South African channels and travel agents should check which systems connect to those channels. NightsBridge, for example, lists local channels and South African travel agents on its website. Compare that against how each engine joins your website and whether bookings can be tracked.

What is the difference between a booking engine and a channel manager?

A booking engine takes bookings on your own website. A channel manager keeps availability and rates in step across the sites you sell through, such as Booking.com and Airbnb. Most of the systems in this comparison include both, tied to one calendar.

Can I track bookings in Google Analytics if my booking engine is on another domain?

Sometimes. It depends on whether the engine lets you add your own tracking and supports reporting across domains. Ask the vendor before you sign up, and ask to see it working on a live property.

Can a booking engine be designed to match my website?

Most engines allow some changes, such as colours and fonts, but the layout and steps are usually fixed. Full control normally means building the booking step through the vendor's API, where one is offered, which takes more development work.

Do I need to change booking systems when I get a new website?

Usually not. A new website can normally connect to the system you already use. It is worth reviewing only if the current engine blocks tracking, cannot connect to the channels you need or gives guests a poor booking step.
