How ChatGPT and Google AI recommend hotels and villas

AI assistants recommend hotels and villas from information they can already reach: Google's own listing, review and price data, pages on the open web, and booking platforms. Google says no special files or markup are needed to appear in its AI answers. For an owner, the work is a complete Business Profile, a website that can be crawled and states specific facts in plain text, and live rates connected to Google.

This article sets out what Google and OpenAI have published about AI travel planning for hotels, and what follows from it. Neither company publishes a formula for choosing one property over another, so be wary of anyone who claims to have one.

How Google's AI finds accommodation

Google has three AI surfaces that matter for travel.

AI Overviews and AI Mode in Search

Google's documentation on AI features says both may use a technique called query fan-out. The system runs several related searches across subtopics and data sources, then builds an answer with supporting links. A traveller's long question becomes many smaller searches.

The same page is clear about requirements. A page must be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet. There are no extra technical requirements, and no new machine-readable files, AI text files or special structured data are needed. Google's listed good practices are ordinary ones: allow crawling, link pages internally, keep important content in text, make structured data match what is visible on the page, and keep your Business Profile current.

Gemini

A Google blog post from August 2026 on how Gemini plans trips says it draws real-time information from Google Maps, Flights and Hotels, including locations, reviews and prices. For accommodation, that means the data Google already holds about your property is the data Gemini works with.

Booking inside AI Mode

On 27 August 2026 Google announced hotel booking inside AI Mode. A traveller describes the trip, sees a visual list of options with guest reviews, and can complete the booking on Google. According to the announcement, this has started rolling out in the United States in English, with launch partners that are large online travel agencies and hotel groups. The hotel or booking platform remains the merchant and handles customer service.

No independent lodge or villa company is named among the launch partners. On the information published so far, an independent property reaches that booking flow through an online travel agency that lists it, not through its own website.

How ChatGPT finds accommodation

OpenAI's crawler documentation describes separate bots with separate jobs:

  • OAI-SearchBot surfaces websites in ChatGPT's search features. OpenAI states that sites opted out of this bot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers.
  • GPTBot collects content that may be used for model training. Blocking it does not affect search.
  • ChatGPT-User fetches a page when a user's request calls for it.

So the first check is simple. If your robots.txt file, security plugin or hosting firewall blocks OAI-SearchBot, your pages cannot be used in ChatGPT's search answers. OpenAI notes that changes to robots.txt can take about a day to take effect.

This documentation explains access, not selection. OpenAI's documentation does not explain how one hotel is chosen over another.

What this means for your property

Get the Google data right

Claim and verify your Business Profile, complete the hotel details and amenities, add current photos and reply to reviews. Connect live rates through your booking system so Google holds real prices for your property. The article on Google free booking links explains how.

Put specific facts in text on your own site

AI travel questions tend to be specific. A prompt such as "a villa in Grand Cayman that sleeps eight with a fenced pool" can only be matched to a page that says those things in words. Check that your site states, in text and not only in images or PDFs:

  • how many rooms or bedrooms, and how many guests each sleeps
  • exactly where you are, with distances to the airport, beach, town or reserve gate
  • what is included in the rate and what costs extra
  • policies on children, pets, smoking and events
  • accessibility details such as steps, lifts and ground-floor rooms
  • check-in and check-out times, minimum stays and seasons

Answer the questions guests ask

Stryx's approach to AI search is to get core SEO right first, then add a short summary at the top of each page and a set of questions and answers. This gives an assistant a clear passage to quote. The hotel SEO guide covers the core work.

Keep the facts the same everywhere

Because an AI answer can draw on several sources at once, differences between your website, Business Profile and booking platform listings can lead to wrong statements about your property. Use the same name, address, room counts, capacities and policies everywhere.

Do not block the crawlers you want

Ask whoever manages your site to confirm that Googlebot and OAI-SearchBot are allowed, at the robots.txt level and at the firewall or content delivery network.

Test it yourself

Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI Mode the questions your guests would ask. Note whether your property appears, what is said about it and whether it is correct. Where a fact is wrong, find which source carries the wrong version and fix it there.

Treat the results as a spot check. Answers change between sessions and between users, so a single prompt is not a ranking report.

Stryx runs this kind of review as an AI visibility audit. For the wider picture, see the guides on getting recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews and AI Mode. Questions about your own property are welcome through the contact page.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an llms.txt file or special markup for AI to recommend my hotel?

Not for Google. Its documentation on AI features says no new machine-readable files, AI text files or special structured data are needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. A page needs to be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. Ordinary structured data is still useful, as long as it matches what is visible on the page.

How do I check whether ChatGPT can read my hotel website?

Check that OAI-SearchBot is not blocked in your robots.txt file or by a security plugin, firewall or content delivery network. OpenAI states that sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers. Allowing GPTBot, which is used for model training, is a separate choice.

Can guests book my property inside Google's AI Mode?

Google announced hotel booking in AI Mode on 27 August 2026. It has started rolling out in the United States in English, with large online travel agencies and hotel groups as launch partners. No independent properties are named, so for now an independent lodge or villa would reach that flow through an agency that lists it.

Can anyone guarantee my hotel will be recommended by AI?

No. Neither Google nor OpenAI publishes a formula for choosing one property over another, and answers vary between sessions and users. What you can control is the accuracy and completeness of the information these systems read about you.
